Google Code

Google has finally decided to shut down its project hosting website Google Code. If you have your project hosted on Google Code, it is the time to move your project to Github.

Google Code was started back in 2006 and was quite popular. But Github has attracted most of its users in past few years. So, Google has decided to shutdown the service. Now you cannot create new projects. On 24 august, it will become a read-only website. On Read-only mode, you will not be able to update your existing projects but will be able to access the code.

Google said that most of the active projects have already been moved from Google Code. So, existing projects are either inactive or spams. So, there is no pint of offering support to those projects. But if there is any legitimate project is there, developers can migrate it to Github.

“As developers migrated away from Google Code, a growing share of the remaining projects were spam or abuse. Lately, the administrative load has consisted almost exclusively of abuse management. After profiling non-abusive activity on Google Code, it has become clear to us that the service simply isn’t needed anymore,” Google Said.

Google has also given a Google Code to GitHub exporter tool to migrate your existing Google Code project to Github easily.
