Election Commission of India has partnered with search giant Google for voters’ registration in India. This partnership will start work by the second week of January. Google will use its resources until June 2014 to help in managing voters registration and showing polling stations online with directions on maps. Voters can check their enrollment status online and locate their polling station.
Google will also manage the website of election commission where voters will also be able to ask their queries. Surprising thing about this partnership is that Google will not charge anything for these services. While estimated cost of this operation is around $50,000. Google has already been offering this kind of services in other 100 countries around the world.
In the election of 2009, website of Election Commission received close of one lakh hits per second. Their server couldn’t survive in front of this huge traffic.
Google will also provide promotional services to drive voters’ participation.
