Indian Government will shortly launch its Internet surveillance system dubbed as ‘Netra’. Full form of NETRA is NEtwork and TRaffic Analysis system. It is capable of detecting pre-defined words like Bomb, blast or kill from Internet users’ tweet, Facebook updates, emails, instant messaging, blogs, forums or internet calls.
This surveillance system is also capable of capturing voice passing through Skype, Google Talk or other popular audio chat services. Currently, the system is being tested by Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat and will be deployed soon. Government is also planing to appoint more man power at CAIR to come up with better solution on how to track on Internet.
“Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat are currently testing ‘Netra’, which will be deployed by all national security agencies,” says a telecom department note.
This Internet Surveillance system has been developed by Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIR), which is a part of DRDO.
With the deployment of Netra, Government is hoping to have an Internet Surveillance system that is already exists in US, UK or China. While using Internet, do not use those words which may put you in trouble.
