Yahoo Acquires Rockmelt; Apps To Shut Down On August 31st

Today, Yahoo has announced another acquisition. This time it has acquired popular web browser company Rockmelt. Terms of the deal were not made public. It’s the 20th acquisition that Yahoo Inc. since Marissa Mayer became the CEO of company. AllThingsD reports that Yahoo paid somewhere between $60 million to $70 million.

Yahoo Acquires Rockmelt

Rockmelt was started back in 2009 as a mobile browser and then launched desktop browser in 2010. It was a social browser based on Chromium. According to blogpost on Rockmelt’s website, Rockmelt apps and web products will be shutdown an August 31. Users are also advised to export their data from each app before that date.

“We’re excited to tell you that Rockmelt has been acquired by Yahoo!,” Rockmelt announced, “Yahoo! and Rockmelt share a common goal: To help people discover the best content from around the web. In our short four and a half years at Rockmelt, we’ve learned a lot about how you like to browse the web, discover content, and share the great stuff you’ve found.”

Technology behind Rockmelt will help Yahoo to bring more traffic and revenue from mobile devices. Marissa Mayer is trying to monetize mobile traffic. Most of the products acquired by the company are focused on mobile computing.

Rockmelt’s top executives, Tim Howes and Eric Vishria both will join Yahoo.
