BlackBerry Ends Long Time Dispute with Indian Government; Gives Direct Access to BlackBerry Server

Finally BlackBerry has resolved the long time dispute Indian government by giving access to their servers in India. Now government officials can monitor encrypted content on BlackBerry service in realtime. They will be able to access emails, chats and browsing history of a BlackBerry device. However, BlackBerry has not given access to its corporate servers.

TOI reporter has managed to get an internet document of Department of Telecommunications that reads, “Baring a few minor points for improvement of viewers, the lawful interception system for BlackBerry Services is ready for use.”

A BlackBerry spokesperson has also confirmed that company had delivered a solution that lets Indian government to access its consumer messaging services, which include BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) email. He again confirmed that BlackBerry Enterprise servers are not under the

“The lawful access capability now available to BlackBerry’s carrier partners meets the standard required by the Government of India for all consumer messaging services offered in the Indian marketplace. We also wish to underscore, once again, that this enablement of lawful access does not extend to BlackBerry Enterprise Server,” said the spokesperson.

BlackBerry has demonstrated the interception capabilities services on June 12 over Vodafone’s network in Mumbai in presence of few officials from the DoT and IB. BlackBerry will also train government persons and help them in whole monitoring process.

9 out of 10 telecom service providers (providing BB services in India) are also under the process of deploying the interception solution.

If you could remember, BlackBerry was threatened to shutdown BlackBerry’s infrastructure in India unless it agreed to comply with government.
