Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 Review

Zenfone Max Pro M1

Asus launched its Zenfone Max Pro M1 with aggressive pricing. This is the reason this phone managed to get lots of attention and saw a huge demand in first sales. People have also started comparing this phone with Redmi note 5 Pro and call it Redmi note 5 Pro killer. I have already written a comparison of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Redmi note 5 Pro. If you missed that read it now.

I have been using the phone for over 15 days now. So, I got enough time to know about the phone properly. Now, here is my review of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is good in terms of design. The phone has a solid build and looks good. The phone comes in Grey and Midnight Black colors. The unit I was using was of Midnight Black color but I felt it was dark navy blue. The phone has rounded edges and back is non-slippery. Even if the phone has a large battery, it still weighs 181 grams.

It has a volume rocker on the right along with the power button. Buttons are tactile and feel nice and clicky. SIM card slot is on the left. The base side has a speaker, microphone, micro USB, and headphone jack. The back panel has a dual camera setup located on the top left side and fingerprint on top center. The fingerprint sensor and other buttons are within easy reach.

It has 5.99-inch 18:9 display with 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution. The display has 2.5D curved glass but lacks any protection. The display offers good experience at both indoor and outdoors. It has good viewing angles and offers rich colors. As there is no protection on the display, you should also look at good cases, back covers and tempered glass for the phone.

Asus Zenfone MAx Pro M1

This time Asus has gone with pure Android experience in place of its ZenUI. So, you get stock Android with few basic apps. I hardly saw any UI lag. The experience of the phone was awesome. The phone runs on latest Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and also promises to offer regular updates. The even claims to offer major Android upgrades till Android Q.

The phone packs 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 636 processor with 3GB and 4GB RAM options. I tested the 3GB RAM model and found the powerful performance at this segment. It has good RAM management and offers smooth performance. Even when there are lots of apps in background, the phone manages to keep its performance fine. It has Adreno 509 to handle graphics. The gaming performance is also good. I tested heavy several games and found good experience.

The phone even scores well in benchmark scores. Here are the scores if you value them.

The phone comes with 32 GB of storage with an option to expand the storage up to 2TB. The phone has a dedicated microSD card, so you do not need to compromise with dual SIM function of the phone. You also get 100 GB of free Google Drive storage for two years. So, the storage section is another good thing that makes this phone notable.

In terms of camera, this phone is good. It offers excellent daylight experience and nice experience with portrait shots. While low-light performance is average, that is the case with every single phone of this price. I have posted Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 camera review with camera samples. Read that to know about camera performance.

The phone offers a decent multimedia experience. It has good sound output with 5 magnet speaker and NXP smart amplifier. It also comes with Asus MaxBox to offer better sound. The phone has a good display as well. So, video experience is also good. The same applies to a gaming experience.

The phone has both a fingerprint sensor and face unlock. The fingerprint sensor works fine but I was not happy with face unlock. It is slow, so using fingerprint is the faster option to unlock the phone. The phone offers VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and micro USB connectivity options. All work well. The in-call sound is good and loudspeaker during call works well.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 packs large 5000 mAh battery that performs well. Trust me, Zenfone Max Pro M1 is the best battery phone of this segment. You can easily get over 2 days of battery backup with regular usage. Even if you are a power user, getting over a day battery backup is easy. It even supports fast charging and comes with 10W fast charger in the box. It takes around 2 hours in fully charging from 0-100%.

Final Words

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 is the new kind of this segment and has managed to outperform Redmi note 5 and even Redmi note 5 Pro. The phone’s large battery without making bulky makes it a unique offering. I am still not sure why there is no protection on the display.
