Back in October 2022, YouTube introduced several design changes and added YouTube mode. The company claims that the ambient mode will offer an immersive video experience. In this article, I will talk about YouTube ambient mode and will tell you how to enable or disable it.

YouTube Ambient Mode
YouTube Ambient Mode adds a gradient colors background on the video player background when you are watching a YouTube video. The app also takes colors for the background from the colors of the YouTube video you’re watching. It feels like colors are leaking from the video players to the area around the video player.
YouTube’s ambient mode I available in web browsers, Android, iOS, and smart TVs. On the desktop, YouTube’s Ambient mode doesn’t work on the Theater mode. So, you need to remain on the default view to use the Ambient mode feature.
This feature is inspired ambient light system that creates a cinema-like atmosphere. Check the photo below to understand what the ambient light system in TV feels like.

How to enable Ambient mode?
You only need to turn on the Dark theme on YouTube to enable Ambient mode.
On the desktop, tap on your profile photo at the top right corner and go to Appearance. Here, select Dark. On mobile apps, tap profile photo and go to Settings and then General. Here, go to Appearance and select Dark theme. It will automatically enable the Ambient mode.
How to Disable Ambient mode?
On the video player, tap the Settings icon and turn off the toggle Ambient mode. It will turn off Ambient mode for all videos.

Wrap Up
YouTube added Ambient mode with an aim to improve he YouTube viewing experience. I mostly watch videos on the desktop using the Theater mode. So, I actually don’t use this feature and would like YouTube to bring the feature for the Theatre mode as well. In Normal view, if you have a large monitor, you will surely like it while watching a video on high resolution.
