Sony is bringing AI-powered upscaling to the standard PS5 with a new technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). The technology builds on the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling system introduced with the PS5 Pro.

Sony has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first two PS5 games to support QSSR. The feature is rolling out with updates for both games today.

QSSR was developed as part of Project Amethyst, Sony’s collaboration with AMD focused on AI-based graphics technology. According to Sony, the new upscaling system builds on PSSR but uses a more efficient neural network and a hand-optimized implementation designed specifically to make better use of the base PS5’s hardware.

The goal is to improve image quality and fine details without requiring the more powerful hardware found in the PS5 Pro. QSSR will be available as an additional graphics option in supported games, giving players another way to balance image quality and performance.

Insomniac Games Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, including areas such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. He also described the feature as a taste of the PS5 Pro experience for players using the standard PS5.

Sucker Punch Productions Lead Engineer Jasmine Patry said QSSR improves fine details in characters and environments in Ghost of Yōtei, while also providing better temporal stability than previously possible on the PS5.

Sony says QSSR will come to more games in the future. The company has not confirmed a complete list of upcoming titles, but the technology could eventually make its way to major games such as Grand Theft Auto 6 and God of War: Laufey. It is still unclear whether either game will support QSSR at launch.
