Playground Games has shown a new 18-minute gameplay demo of Fable at Gamescom 2026, giving players a closer look at one of the game’s early quests, the city of Bowerstone and its mix of swordplay, ranged attacks and magic. The game is now scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PC and PS5.

The new footage is interesting because it shows what actually makes this Fable different from a standard fantasy action RPG. Bowerstone is not just a place where players go to pick up quests. Playground Games says the city has more than 400 fully voiced NPCs, with characters reacting to the player’s actions and having their own lives.

The demo follows the hero as they return home to their spouse and daughter before heading to the Heroes’ Guild. There, they meet Humphry the Golden, a former legendary hero who has fallen on hard times. The player needs his help, but getting it means dealing with a series of problems involving the guild and a local gang.

One of the most interesting parts of the demo is how Fable continues to build its world around player choices. Even small decisions can change how characters see the hero.

The footage shows the player interacting with a thug trainee and choosing how to deal with him. These encounters are not simply dialogue options that disappear after a conversation. Characters can remember what happens and appear again later.

That is an important part of what made the older Fable games different from many fantasy RPGs. The new game appears to be keeping that idea while giving it a much bigger world to work with.

The game also goes beyond traditional quests. Players can own properties, take jobs and build relationships. The demo even shows the hero with a spouse and daughter, giving a better idea of how the game mixes its main adventure with a more personal life simulation.

Combat is another major focus of the new footage. Instead of locking players into one fighting style, Fable lets them switch between melee weapons, ranged attacks and magic during combat.

The demo shows sword attacks, bow shots and several spells being used in the same encounters. Players can dodge incoming attacks, parry enemies and use magic to deal with groups or create openings.

Some of the previously shown abilities are particularly suited to Fable’s playful tone. The hero can throw fireballs, call down lightning and use magical blades, while other spells can teleport the player or even turn enemies into chickens.

The combat is therefore less about building a complicated character around one weapon and more about combining different abilities depending on what is happening around you. Playground Games calls this “style-weaving combat”, with the different combat types designed to work together without constantly stopping the action to change equipment.

If you have never played Fable, the easiest way to understand the new game is to think of it as a fantasy action RPG mixed with a life simulation and a choice-driven adventure.

The combat should feel familiar to players who enjoy games such as The Witcher 3 or Kingdoms of Amalur, with real-time melee and ranged combat. But Fable puts much more emphasis on interacting with the people around you. Buying a house, getting a job, building relationships and deciding how you treat NPCs are all part of the experience.

That is where the game could stand apart from other large fantasy RPGs. You are not simply creating a powerful character and moving from one quest marker to another. The idea is to build a life in Albion while dealing with the larger story.

Bowerstone also appears to be designed as a major part of that experience. The city is packed with NPCs, businesses and properties, giving players reasons to explore it beyond the main quest.

After several years of development and multiple delays, the new gameplay footage finally gives a clearer picture of what Playground Games is trying to achieve with Fable. It looks less like a simple revival of the old series and more like an attempt to bring its mix of combat, humor, choices and everyday life into a modern open-world RPG.

Fable will launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PC and PS5. It will also be available through Game Pass.
