Apple has quietly launched a new version of its Polishing Cloth, and this time the company has made the product cheaper.

The new Apple Polishing Cloth is priced at $9 in the US, down from $19 for the previous version. Apple has not announced any major change to the product, and the company has not explained why the price has been cut by more than half. The new cloth appeared on Apple’s online store alongside the updated Mac mini and Mac Studio.

Apple’s costly Polishing Cloth was one of the company’s most recognisable jokes in recent years. Its price attracted far more attention than a piece of cleaning fabric probably deserved. It quickly became an internet meme, but the product also turned out to be surprisingly popular.

Apple describes the new Polishing Cloth as being made from a soft, non-abrasive material that can safely clean Apple displays, including displays with nano-texture glass. The product description is essentially the same as the previous version.

Reports comparing the two products suggest that the material and intended use appear unchanged, although it is still not clear whether there are any physical differences such as size or construction.

Apple has also replaced the previous product listing with a new model rather than simply changing the price of the existing one. The company has not said what prompted the change.
