For years, Google’s Pixel phones have been better known for photography than video. Google built a strong reputation around computational photography, but its video experience has often lagged behind what Apple and Samsung offer on their flagship phones.
The Pixel 11 series shows that Google is finally giving video much more attention. The Pro models get 8K recording, while the entire lineup gets improvements to stabilization, zoom, audio and tools for creating videos.
Better Video Recording
The Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL can record 8K video at 24fps and 30fps using Video Boost. The regular Pixel 11 remains limited to 4K video at up to 60fps.
The Pro models also get Pro Stable Video, which combines optical image stabilization, electronic stabilization, and Google’s fused stabilization technology. The goal is to make handheld footage smoother, especially when recording while walking or moving.
The entire Pixel 11 lineup also supports up to 20x Super Res Zoom Video. This could be useful for recording concerts, sports, and other subjects that are far away.
One of the more interesting Tensor G6 upgrades is its new custom Video Portrait Engine. It enables 4K Portrait Video, allowing the Pixel 11 to apply background blur to video at 4K resolution. This is a good example of how Google is using dedicated hardware for video processing instead of relying only on the CPU and GPU.
Google has also improved the video pipeline for low-light recording, with better noise reduction and sharpening. The phones can also make smoother transitions between lenses while recording.
Better Audio
Video quality is only part of the experience. Google has also added several audio improvements to the Pixel 11 series.
The phones support stereo recording, wind reduction and Audio Zoom. There are also Speech Enhancement and Audio Magic Eraser features designed to make voices clearer and reduce unwanted sounds.
These improvements could be particularly useful for people recording interviews, outdoor videos, events and social media content without carrying a separate microphone.
Google Is Building for Creators
Google has also added a Creator Suite with tools aimed at people who regularly create videos on their phones. It includes a built-in teleprompter, Storyboard tools for arranging clips, an audio visualizer and framing guides for social media.
This makes sense as more people use their phones as their primary camera for YouTube videos, short-form content, tutorials and other types of video.
Magic Capture takes a different approach. Instead of asking users to capture a photo at exactly the right moment, it records a short video and uses AI to find useful moments and turn them into photos. The original video is also saved.
The idea is simple. You can focus on the moment while the phone handles the job of finding the best frame later.
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold Has One Useful Video Trick
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold gets a feature that makes particular sense for a foldable phone.
Dual Screen Preview lets the person being recorded see a live preview on the outer display while the rear cameras are being used. This makes it easier to record yourself using the main camera instead of relying on the front camera.
It is a small feature, but it solves a real problem with using a foldable phone as a camera.
Video Boost Is Powerful, But It Comes With a Trade-off
Video Boost deserves more attention because it is both one of Google’s strengths and one of its limitations.
The Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL use Video Boost for 8K video. The phone records the original video on the device, while Google’s cloud processing is used to create the enhanced version. The original recording remains available, so users do not lose the footage if they do not use Video Boost.
The trade-off is that the enhanced version depends on cloud processing. Google requires the video to be backed up to Google Photos, after which its servers process the footage and generate the boosted version.
That approach makes sense for a demanding workload such as 8K video. Processing large amounts of high-resolution footage locally requires significant computing power and can also affect battery life. Cloud processing gives Google access to more computing resources without putting all of that hardware inside the phone.
But it also makes Video Boost less immediate than normal camera processing. With a regular photo, the phone processes the image and gives you the result almost instantly. With Video Boost, the footage needs to be uploaded and processed before the enhanced version is ready.
There is also a privacy consideration. Google says it does not sell personal information or use content stored in Google Photos for advertising, but Video Boost still requires the footage to be uploaded for processing. That may be fine for a holiday video or a family clip, but some users may not want videos recorded at work, private events, or other sensitive situations to leave their device.
This makes on-device processing an important part of the future of Pixel video.
The Bigger Change Is Tensor G6
The most interesting part of the Pixel 11’s video upgrade is not the addition of 8K. It is how much Google is using the Tensor G6 to change what the camera can do.
The chip has a new video processing engine, a more powerful TPU and other dedicated hardware designed around Google’s computational photography and video workloads. Features such as 4K Portrait Video and Magic Capture show why Google is building this hardware specifically for the Pixel.
Google is taking the same approach it used to make Pixel photography competitive and applying more of it to video.
The question now is how much of that processing can eventually happen directly on the phone.
Google has finally taken Pixel video seriously. The Pixel 11 is a much more capable video phone, especially the Pro models. But Google’s next challenge is to make computational video as quick and simple as computational photography.
Video Boost shows what Google can achieve with cloud processing, but it also brings waiting and privacy trade-offs. If Google can bring more of that processing directly to the phone, Pixel video could become not just better, but also faster, more private and easier to use.
That would be a much bigger upgrade than simply adding 8K video.
