X has quietly introduced a major restriction for users who do not pay for the platform’s premium subscription. Free accounts on X are now reportedly limited to just 50 original posts and 200 replies per day unless users subscribe to the platform’s paid verification service.

The new limitation was first noticed by users on X and Reddit after the platform updated its Help Center page. The updated support page now clearly mentions that unverified accounts can only make 50 posts and 200 replies daily.

This is a massive drop compared to the older limit, which was 2,400 posts per day. Interestingly, parts of the support page still reference the old 2,400 daily updates limit, suggesting the changes may have been rolled out recently without a major announcement.

Users who hit the new restriction reportedly receive an error message telling them they have reached the posting limit for the day.

The move appears to be another attempt by X owner Elon Musk to push more users toward paid subscriptions. Users who want higher posting limits will likely need to subscribe to X Premium, whose Basic plan starts at $3 per month or $32 per year.

At the same time, the restriction could also be linked to spam and bot control efforts. Over the past year, X has introduced several features aimed at improving transparency and reducing fake accounts. One example was the “About This Account” feature introduced last year, which shows details such as account creation date and location information.

Still, many users are unhappy with the new limitations. Some believe the restrictions could hurt regular users more than bots, especially people who actively engage in discussions, live events, gaming communities, or breaking news conversations.

There is also speculation that this may further reduce activity on the platform. X has already faced criticism for several controversial changes since Elon Musk took over the company, including API restrictions, verification changes, and reduced moderation efforts. Some users feel that limiting basic posting activity behind a paywall could push more people toward competing platforms like Meta’s Threads or decentralized social networks.

Another concern is that smaller creators and community accounts may struggle with the limit. Accounts that regularly post updates, gaming clips, memes, sports commentary, or customer support replies could easily cross the daily cap without realizing it.

For now, X has not officially announced the change through a public blog post or press release. However, the updated Help Center page and growing user reports strongly suggest that the new restrictions are already active for free users.
