Nintendo has rolled out the Version 22.0.0 system update for both the original Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. While the update includes several small changes and stability improvements, one feature stands out for gamers who prefer playing in handheld mode.
The update introduces a new “Handheld Mode Boost” option on the Nintendo Switch 2. When enabled, compatible Switch games can run in handheld mode as if the console is connected to a TV. In simple terms, the system tries to run the game using the same settings that are normally reserved for TV mode.
This could offer better visuals and improved performance when playing in handheld mode, depending on the game. Many Switch titles usually have lower resolution or graphical quality when running on the handheld screen to save power. With this new option, some of those limitations may be reduced.
However, Nintendo notes that certain features in some games may behave differently when the option is enabled, since the system is essentially forcing TV mode settings while the console is still being used as a handheld.
Apart from this highlight, the update also brings a few smaller additions. Players can now add private notes about friends in their Friend List, which are visible only to them. The update also improves GameChat screen sharing quality and adds quick 10-second rewind and forward controls when watching full-screen videos in the News section or the Nintendo eShop.
There are also small accessibility improvements, storage management updates, and tweaks to Airplane Mode settings.
