DJI has officially introduced the Osmo Action 6, its latest flagship action camera. The company announced the device alongside the DJI Neo 2. This new model stands out because it is DJI’s first action camera to feature a variable aperture, breaking away from the traditional fixed-aperture design that most action cameras use.

DJI Osmo Action 6

The Osmo Action 6 is built for creators who want better control over exposure and depth of field. With a new square 1/1.1-inch sensor, DJI is promising better image quality, improved low-light performance, and more flexibility for sports, travel, adventure, and everyday vlogging.

One of the biggest upgrades is the variable aperture system. The Osmo Action 6 lets users adjust the aperture between f/2.0 and f/4.0. This gives more freedom to manage light and depth based on shooting conditions.

  • In Auto mode, the camera automatically adjusts the aperture to match the lighting.
  • In Super Night Mode, the camera opens up to f/2.0 for better low-light clarity.
  • When using a macro lens, users can create a shallow depth of field for close-up shots.
  • The new Starburst Mode uses the f/4.0 aperture to create a starburst effect from bright point light sources.

This is a major shift for action cameras, which usually stick to a fixed aperture. DJI is giving creators more control without compromising on the rugged design action cameras are known for.

DJI has upgraded the sensor to a 1/1.1-inch square unit with 2.4 μm equivalent pixels. With a claimed dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops, the Osmo Action 6 aims to deliver cleaner images with better highlight and shadow recovery.

Key camera capabilities include:

  • Up to 4K 120fps recording in a 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Super Night Mode recording at up to 4K 60fps
  • 10-bit D-Log M shooting for more flexibility during color grading
  • A new noise reduction algorithm for night scenes
  • A 4K free cropping mode that lets users record once and crop later to 16:9, 9:16, and other ratios

This new square sensor is one of the highlights of the Action 6. It gives creators more room to reframe footage for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms.

DJI has added several new tools to help users get better results:

  • Super Stabilizer 3.0 and 4K HorizonSteady for ultra-stable footage
  • Up to 2x lossless zoom while keeping 4K clarity
  • A new wide-angle mode that reduces vertical distortion
  • Built-in film tone modes for quick color styles

Combined with the variable aperture and larger sensor, these features make the Action 6 more versatile for filmmaking and action sports.

The Osmo Action 6 also brings a set of hardware and software improvements:

  • Battery life: Up to 4 hours of shooting on one charge
  • Fast charging: Up to 80% in about 22 minutes, full charge in around 52 minutes
  • Operating range: Works from -20°C to 45°C
  • Storage: Built-in 50GB storage space
  • Transfer speeds: Up to 80MB/s over Wi-Fi 6.0 and 300MB/s over USB 3.1
  • Timecode support for multi-camera workflows
  • Upgraded gesture control for hands-free start/stop
  • Portrait mode and subject centering for easier vlogging

DJI is also introducing new macro and wide-angle lenses. These expand the creative range by allowing closer focusing and an even wider field of view—up to 182°.

The Osmo Action 6 fits into DJI’s broader Osmo ecosystem:

  • It supports direct connection with two DJI microphone transmitters via OsmoAudio™, offering dual-person recording without extra receivers.
  • The magnetic quick-release system now supports two-way attachment for faster angle changes.
  • The camera is waterproof up to 20 meters without a case.
  • A color temperature sensor and water pressure gauge help maintain accurate colors and record underwater data.
  • For sports users, stabilization and on-screen data dashboards help enhance action footage.

Overall, DJI is positioning this as a premium, all-around action camera for creators who want more control and better quality.
