Sony India has launched the new Alpha 7R VI full-frame mirrorless camera in India. It is the latest addition to the company’s Alpha 7R series and brings major upgrades in image quality, autofocus, speed, and video recording. Along with the camera, Sony has also introduced the new XLR-A4 XLR Adaptor for professional audio recording.
The Sony Alpha 7R VI features a 66.8MP effective full-frame back-illuminated stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the latest BIONZ XR2 image processor and a dedicated AI processing unit. Sony claims the new sensor offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range and improved noise performance in the mid-sensitivity range. It also delivers up to 5.6 times faster sensor readout compared to its predecessor.

The faster sensor allows blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30fps with up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second. The camera also features Sony’s Real-time Recognition AF+ system that uses AI-based skeletal human pose estimation for faster and more accurate subject tracking.
The camera comes with 5-axis in-body image stabilization offering up to 8.5 stops of compensation at the centre and up to 7 stops at the edges. It also includes an upgraded Auto White Balance system that combines visible light and infrared sensors with deep-learning algorithms for improved colour accuracy. Sony has also added support for its Camera Authenticity Solution based on the C2PA standard.
The Alpha 7R VI uses the new NP-SA100 2670mAh battery. Sony says it can capture up to 710 photos using the LCD monitor or up to 600 shots using the electronic viewfinder under CIPA standards.
The camera features a 9.44-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with support for a DCI-P3 equivalent colour gamut and 10-bit HDR. Sony says the viewfinder is around three times brighter than conventional models. Other highlights include dual USB Type-C ports for charging and data transfer at the same time, illuminated rear buttons, a durable magnesium alloy body, a 4-axis multi-angle LCD display, and customizable Memory Recall functionality.
The Alpha 7R VI supports 8K video recording at 30fps using 8.2K oversampling. It can also record full-frame 4K videos at up to 60fps and 4K videos at 120fps without any crop. Sony has introduced Dual Gain Shooting technology in the Alpha series for the first time. It is designed to reduce image noise while preserving shadow details for smoother colour gradation. The camera also features redesigned in-body stabilization with improved roll compensation, Dynamic Active Mode stabilization, and advanced heat management that allows up to 120 minutes of continuous 8K recording.
When used with the new XLR-A4 adaptor, the camera also supports internal 32-bit float audio recording.
The new Sony XLR-A4 XLR Adaptor supports up to four channels of digital audio recording through Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe. It supports XLR microphones, including the ECM-778, as well as 3.5mm stereo microphones. It also enables up to 96kHz 32-bit float four-channel recording on compatible Sony cameras. Sony says the adaptor uses dual AD converters to deliver a wider dynamic range while eliminating the need for manual gain adjustments.
Compared to the older XLR-K3M adaptor, the XLR-A4 has a slimmer design, a stronger chassis, and includes an extension cable that allows flexible mounting up to 60cm away from the camera. It can also function as a 96kHz/24-bit USB audio interface when connected to a PC.
Sony has also introduced several new accessories alongside the camera. These include the NP-SA100 rechargeable battery, BC-SAD1 dual battery charger, DC-C2 DC Coupler for continuous power delivery, and the VG-C6 vertical grip that supports two NP-SA100 batteries.
