WhatsApp is rolling out a new safety feature to protect users from scam groups. Now, if someone adds you to a group and they are not in your contacts, you will see a warning alert before you even open the chat.

This alert is part of a broader push by WhatsApp to fight back against scams. The warning shows helpful details like when the group was created, how many members are in it, and whether anyone else in the group is already in your contacts. It also gives you simple tips to avoid scams and lets you leave the group immediately without even opening it.

The idea is to give people a moment to pause and think before engaging. It is especially useful because scammers often use group chats to trick users into clicking links or sharing personal info.

WhatsApp also said it is working on more safety features, including similar alerts for direct messages. Scammers often start on one platform and then move to WhatsApp to continue the fraud. The company is trying to find better ways to stop this kind of behavior.

Besides adding new tools, WhatsApp is also banning accounts linked to scam activity. In just the first half of 2025, it blocked over 6.8 million accounts tied to scam operations.

Scams on social media are nothing new. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has warned about this trend many times in the past. With this new feature, WhatsApp is trying to stay ahead of the scammers and give users more control and information.
