Opera VPN Pro has received a big upgrade. The service is now powered by ExpressVPN’s Lightway technology, known for offering faster speeds, better privacy, and enhanced security. With this change, Opera VPN Pro also gets 15 new server locations. It brings the total server count to 48 around the world.
Lightway is a VPN protocol developed by ExpressVPN. It is open-source, fast, and secure. ExpressVPN even rewrote it in Rust to make it safer and more efficient. It is designed to work well on mobile devices, reducing battery usage and improving connection speed.
Lightway also comes with post-quantum protection. This helps defend against both current cyber threats and future ones that could come with quantum computing.
Earlier, Opera VPN Pro used NordVPN’s infrastructure. But now Opera has decided to switch to ExpressVPN’s Lightway. The company believes this move will offer a better experience to users.
Michael Tegos, Product Marketing Manager for Privacy and Security at Opera, said Lightway’s open-source nature and regular security checks make it a strong fit. He added that its performance on mobile devices and post-quantum encryption were also key reasons for the switch.
Opera also reassures users that the upgraded VPN Pro still follows a strict no-log policy. This was confirmed by an independent audit in September 2024.
Opera VPN Pro is built into the Opera browser. It is not a separate app. If you already use the service, the browser will automatically update the VPN on your next startup (on Windows and macOS). Android users will be prompted to update the app to get the new features.
New users can try Opera VPN Pro for free for 7 days. The service can be used on up to six devices at the same time.
