In a major shift in global smartphone manufacturing, India has now overtaken China as the top exporter of smartphones to the US. This marks a significant milestone for India’s electronics manufacturing industry.
According to the latest report by Canalys, 44% of all smartphones imported into the US in Q2 2025 were made in India. In contrast, China’s share has dropped sharply from 61% last year to a much lower percentage now. This shows that smartphone brands are looking beyond China for production.
It is important to note that the change did not happen overnight. A big chunk of credit goes to Apple, which has been actively diversifying its manufacturing base away from China. Apple has been building up its iPhone inventory from India to avoid tariff issues that started during the Trump administration’s trade wars. The company is not just assembling iPhones in India, but also reportedly doing early manufacturing work there. If reports are to be believed, Apple plans to shift all US iPhone production to India by next year.
But Apple is not alone. Samsung and Motorola have also increased their exports to the US from India. This collective move has pushed India into the spotlight as a reliable and scalable manufacturing hub, not just for domestic demand but for global supply chains as well.
Apple continued its dominance in the US market with 13.3 million smartphone shipments, which gives it a massive 49% market share. Samsung followed with 8.3 million units (31%), while Motorola stood third with 3.2 million units and a 12% market share. Google and TCL each had a modest 3% share, shipping just under a million units each.

In total, 27.1 million smartphones were shipped in the US during Q2 2025. Analysts expect the US smartphone demand to stay flat in the coming months. But the most notable is the place where these phones are being made.
This shift is a big win for India. It not only signals a massive boost in India’s manufacturing capabilities, but also shows how global brands are starting to trust Indian factories for large-scale production. India’s role in the global tech supply chain is set to grow even stronger.
