WhatsApp uses phone numbers to create an account and uses the same as the identity for accounts. So, other people need to know your phone number for contacting you on WhatsApp. But the company now wants to change it in a bid to become a social messaging platform. The company may soon introduce usernames.

WABetaInfo spotted the username option in the latest version of WhatsApp beta version 2.23.11.15. It will be added to the profile page inside Settings. The feature is currently in development and not yet visible. So, there’s nothing more we can share with you.

There could be certain cases when you do not want to reveal your phone number but want to have a conversation with someone on WhatsApp. The username feature can help users in hiding their phone numbers.

WhatsApp developers are actively adding new features to keep the platform interesting and improve user experience. The company recently added the ability to edit sent messages, a new chat Lock feature, ability to use the same account on multiple devices.
