Twitter rolls out encrypted DMs only for verified users

Twitter

As promised yesterday, Twitter has started rolling out the encrypted direct messaging feature. However, the feature is being initially rolled out to verified Twitter users including Twitter Blue subscribers and users who are a part of a ‘Verified Organization.’

For now, encrypted messages can only include text and links. You cannot send media and other attachments in the encrypted conversation. Although messages are encrypted, metadata are not.

For using the encrypted messages, both the sender and recipient should be using the latest version of Twitter apps. Twitter confirmed that both the sender and recipient should be a verified user or an affiliate of a verified organization for using encrypted messaging on Twitter. The recipient must also follow the sender and have sent a message to the sender previously or accessed a DM request from the sender in the past.

If you are eligible to send encrypted messages, you will see a toggle to enable ‘encrypted’ mode. Encrypted conversations will show a lock icon badge on the avatar. To confirm if the conversation is encrypted, go to the conversation info page and you will see the label “Messages are encrypted” at the top of the conversation.

Encrypted Direct Message threads will be shown as separate conversations, alongside your existing regular Direct Messages in your Twitter inbox.

For now, encrypted messages are only available for individual chats. It will soon be expanded to group conversations.

Twitter also promises to open-source this implementation through a technical whitepaper later this year.
