Google Play Store Updates

Google has added UPI Autopay in Google Play Store for subscription purchases in India. UPI autopay lets users make recurring payments automatically using UPI.

Now if you try to purchase something on Google Play Store, you can select the “Pay with UPI” option in the payment method and then approve the purchase in the supported UPI app.

“With the introduction of UPI Autopay on the platform, we aim to extend the convenience of UPI to subscription-based purchases, helping many more people access helpful and delightful services – while enabling local developers to grow their subscription-based businesses on Google Play,” Saurabh Agarwal, Head of Google Play Retail & Payments Activation said.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched UPI Autopay in July for recurring payments. Users can use it for recurring payments such as phone bills, electricity bills, OTT subscriptions, etc. UPI Autopay automatically deducts the amount from your bank every time your subscription needs renewal.

This move will certainly help customers who are struggling after RBI’s new auto-debit rules came into effect. The change impacted lakhs of customers who were making recurring online transactions through credit cards.

Netflix, Gaana, JioSaavn, and a few other apps already support UPI Autopay billing.
