WhatsApp’s new app for Windows no longer requires you to link your phone. The updated app runs natively on Windows, unlike the previous one which was WhatsApp’s web-based desktop app. So, the new WhatsApp app for Windows should run faster.

The updated app has a cleaner interface but mostly looks the same. Now you no longer need to keep your phone online to access WhatsApp on the desktop. So, you can keep messaging your friends from Windows PC even if your phone is offline.

The company now asks you to link a device to a smartphone. Once linked, you can keep using WhatsApp on the linked device to send or receive messages, share photos, share files, and make audio or video calls with end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp lets users link up to four devices and keep using WhatsApp on linked devices even if the phone has no active internet connection. If you don’t use WhatsApp on your phone in 14 days, it will automatically log out all linked devices.

A similar native app for macOS is still under development and the company is now testing it in a closed beta. The company is also reportedly working on an iPad version of the app.
