After TikTok became popular, Instagram and YouTube also jumped into the short video segment. Instagram’s Reels are now quite popular but YouTube’s Shorts is also enjoying a good user base. The company now claims that 1.5 billion people watch Shorts each month. It is around 75% of YouTube’s global user base.

YouTube Shorts generated an average of 30 billion views per day. It is four times more than last year.

“We’ve seen significant investment in online video, and there’s been a ton of innovation, but there are 2 billion logged-in viewers who visit YouTube every single month,” Pichai said. “More people are creating content on YouTube than ever before, and the team remains very focused on trying to help innovate.”

Alphabet, the parent company of Google that runs YouTube, confirmed the numbers while announcing its first-quarter earnings. CEO Sundar Pichai also revealed that the number of YouTube channels that made at least $10,000 in revenue also have a growth of 40% year over year.

Last year, YouTube also made a $100 million Shorts fund to pay creators up to $10,000 per month for making popular Shorts videos. This also helped the company a lot in attracting creators to the platform.

Even if YouTube enjoyed good engagement and views, the platform missed its quarterly ad revenue projection. It earned $6.87 billion in the quarter while it was expected to earn $7.51 billion.
