Netflix will charge extra if you share account with others

Netflix account sharing is really common. At present, multiple friends share the same account and contribute in the subscription. The company also knows that people usually share their accounts with friends. So, the company has now decided to make extra money from account sharing. If you share your Netflix account with friends, you could end up paying extra for this.

The company has no issue if your family members share the account. The company already lets you create seperate profiles for family members. But Netflix doesn’t want you to share account outside the household.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households – impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members,” Netflix says.

Netflix doesn’t want you to stop sharing your account with friends. The company has itself introduced safe and easy way to share accounts but you will have to pay a bit more. The company has added two ways to share the account. Netflix has already added these two options in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

The first way is to add extra member in standard and premium plan. You can add up to two sub accounts. Each sub-account will have their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password. Adding a sub-account will cost extra. It costs 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru.

Users who were sharing account can now easily transfer their profile to a new account or on an extra member account. In this way, they can keep their watch history, recommendation, and lists.

If the company gets success in initial testing in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, it will surely be released in other countries including India. India is a big country where Netflix is struggling. There are two primary reasons. First is the high cost of subscription and second is the accounts sharing. The company also recently reduced subscription prices. Now it wants to block accounts sharing.
