Sony has acquired the popular gaming studio Bungie for $3.6 Billion. Bungie is known for Halo and Destiny franchise. The company will continue to be an independent studio even after being acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family,” says SIE president CEO Jim Ryan.

Bungie was founded back in 1991 and has made several games for both PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles. Microsoft acquired Bungie back in 2000 and released Halo as an exclusive first-person shooter title for the Xbox. The company became a privately held independent company again in 2007. The company signed 10 years of publishing deal with Activision in April 2010 and released Destiny in 2014 and Destiny 2 in 2017. This partnership ended in 2019 and Bungie took over publishing for Destiny

Sony’s acquisition of Bungie came only a few days after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard. It seems both the companies are trying their best to get as many Studios on board to keep as much exclusivity as possible for their gaming platforms.
