Tencent is adding another big gaming studio to its portfolio by acquiring Slamfire. Slamfire is the parent company of Turtle Rock Studios that is known for the video game Back 4 Blood. There will be no change in the current leadership of the company even after the acquisition and the company will retain its independent operations in California.

“By joining the Tencent family, we will not only get access to their vast resources and expertise, but we have found a partner who is encouraging us to be ambitious and visionary. Although our company is being acquired, we will remain independent and continue to be run by our co-founders, Phil Robb and Chris Ashton,” said the company in a press release.

Tencent has a big portfolio of gaming companies. It owns some of the big gaming studios or has the majority of stake in some of the biggest gaming companies. Some of the big names that Tencent owns or has stakes include Riot Games, Supercell, Funcom, Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, and Ubisoft.

As per a report by Niko Partners, Tencent invested in more than 100 video game-related companies in 2021 and nearly 30 percent of those deals were outside of China. In 2020, Tencent invested in 31 companies while it was just 10 in 2019. This shows that Tencent is now really aggressive to push itself into the gaming segment. Tencent is silently investing in global gaming companies to become a gaming superpower globally.
