The original PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) will become a free-to-play game starting January 12st, 2022. Developer Krafton has confirmed this news at the 2021 Game Awards.

The game was initially launched as a Paid game on Steam in early access in 2017. This game became so popular that Epic Games also added a similar battle royale mode in Fortnite.

PUBG is becoming free but some of the game elements will still be paid. The company plans to add an optional one-time $12.99 “account upgrade” called Battlegrounds Plus to give you access to ranked and custom match modes, in-game items, and more.

Gamers who paid for the game in the past will receive PUBG Special Commemorative Pack. This pack will offer Battlegrounds Plus and additional in-game items.

PUBG is a really popular game and has already sold over 75 million copies since its release, Krafton. When the company introduced free-to-play PUBG Mobile, the game even broke several records and has been downloaded over a billion times. Recently, the company also released a free-to-play mobile PUB game, PUBG: New State.
