On Wednesday, Amazon announced that it will shut down its global website ranking platform Alexa.com. Alexa.com will be discontinued in May 2022. The website has been available for 25 years and is being used by website owners to compare how their website performs against competitors in web ranking. Alexa browser extension is also notifying people about this announcement.

Along with offering a global website ranking system, Alexa.com also offers a full suite of SEO and competitor analysis tools. These SEO tools are available under a paid subscription.

“Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us your go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, and so much more,” the Alexa support page reads.

If you were an existing Alexa.com subscriber, I recommend you to check SEMrush.com. It is one of the best SEO tools out there and I personally use it.

Amazon has already stopped taking new subscriptions. Customers with existing subscriptions will continue to have access to data and SEO tools until May 1, 2022.

Alexa ranking was easy to manipulate because it mainly relied on data collected by Alexa browser extensions. That’s the reason people started losing interest in Alexa rank. Although, many marketing and PR agencies still use Alexa rank to understand how popular a website is.
