Popular streaming service Netflix has started offering a free tier in Kenya. The free tier offers some of its content at no cost. Users are not asked to enter any payment information upon sign-up and they won’t serve ads as well. The only thing they need to enter is an email, password and confirm if they’re over 18.
There are several limitations of this free tier. It is only available to Android users. Users won’t be able to download content for offline viewing. It will also not allow them to cast shows or movies on a TV.
The company believes that the free tier will encourage a lot of people who never tried Netflix to install and watch content on Netflix. If they like the content, some of them will surely pay for the subscription to explore more content.
Netflix will test this free tier in the county for a few days to see how users are responding to this. Based on the information it gathers, the company will later make its business decisions in other countries.
The company also added a “watch free” page last year where people can stream some of the episodes of original movies and popular photos without even having to log in.
