Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi recently became the world’s top smartphone globally for the first time in June 2021. The company sells smartphones under different brands including Mi, Redmi, and Poco. As per the report from XDA Developers, the company is now phasing out its Mi branding and will put promote Xiaomi branding instead.

Recently. Xiaomi launched Mix 4 that didn’t carry Mi branding. This was a hint but not many people noticed it. Now we know why the company called it Xiaomi Mix 4 in place of Mi Mix 4.

After the report came, a Xiaomi spokesperson also confirmed this. “Starting in 2021 Q3, Xiaomi’s product series ‘Mi’ will be renamed to ‘Xiaomi’,” he said. “This change will unify our global brand presence and close the perception gap between the brand and its products,” Xiaomi confirmed that it will use Xiaomi and Redmi branding on the different products of its ecosystem.

Xiaomi launched Mi 1 back in 2011. This was the first smartphone to carry Mi branding and was a flagship phone at that time. In successive years, Xiaomi launched several successful Mi smartphones in China and expanded to Singapore and India. Xiaomi’s Android-based custom OS MIUI also carries MI branding. I am not sure if the company will change the name of it.

Mi branding is going away just for smartphones. Mi Home Stores will continue to carry the same name.
