As per reports, the upcoming iPhone 13 series could come with low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication connectivity. If this is true, iPhone 13 series will enable making calls and sending messages without cellular coverage. This information was revealed by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

For enabling LEO satellite communication, Apple will use Qualcomm’s customized Qualcomm X60 baseband chip. Apple is also said to be working with Globalstar, an American satellite company, that operates low LEO satellite constellation for low-speed data communication and satellite phone. Qualcomm and Globalstar are working together to offer connectivity over the n53 band on the X65 chip. But Apple will get the same on customized X60 chip.

Kuo also confirmed that iPhone 13 won’t require any additional payment for getting LEO satellites connectivity. However, Network operators may need to work with Globalstar to enable this feature.

Back in 2019, Bloomberg reported about Apple’s interest in satellite communications. The company is said to have a secret team working on satellites communication.

Apple isn’t the only company that is using LEO satellite connectivity. Elon Musk’s Starlink uses satellites in a lower orbit to beam the internet. Hughesnet and OneWeb are also working on the same tech to launch the Starlink alternative.

Apple is expected to launch iPhone 13 series in September. The phone is expected to come with an upgraded design with a smaller notch, thicker camera bump, and new color options.
