Instagram’s algorithm to demote Reels videos with TikTok watermark

Instagram has confirmed that it is making changes in its algorithms to demote Reels videos with TikTok watermark. This move aims to get original Reels content rather than just re-posted TikTok videos.

Instagram won’t delete or hide these videos but will demote, so they won’t be ranked up in the Reels section. Users can still repost TikTok content but will get less engagement and reach.

Most TikTok influencers repost their TikTok videos to Reels. This is the reason you could see several Reels videos with TikTok watermark. Now when TikTok is banned in India, Indian influencers are posting original content. Instagram wants influencers follow the same.

“We’re building on what we’ve learned from Explore to recommend fun and entertaining videos in places like the Reels tab, and personalize the experience. We are getting better at using ranking signals that help us predict whether people will find a reel entertaining and whether we should recommend it,” Instagram spokesperson Devi Narasimhan said in a statement given to The Verge.

Instagram’s Reels is actually the clone of TikTok with almost similar interface and features. This feature was aggressively promoted soon after Indian government banned TikTok in India.

Reels is competing against Moj, Gaana Hotshot, MX Takatak, Josh, Chingari, Mitron, and many similar short video apps in India. Moj by ShareChat, Gaana Hotshot, and MX Takatak have enough backing to compete well but Instagram already had a huge user base. So, it could easily get users for Reels.
