Back in April, we reported YouTube’s plan of launching “YouTube Shorts” to compete against TikTok. Now the company has officially confirmed the existence of YouTube Shorts.

YouTube Shorts is a short-form video experience for creators to shoot short videos using mobile phones. The interface of Shorts will let creators set timer, adjust video speed, and add music. One can shoot up to 15 seconds long video and share it on the app.

It will be available in India over the next few days in early beta with a handful of new creation tools. The company will keep improving it based on users’ feedback.

YouTube recently added a row on the home page for short videos. Users can tap to open a short video and then swipe vertically to move from one video to the next. Similar to what happens on any other short video app.

Now when TikTok isn’t available in India, YouTube Shorts will be competing against Instagram’s Reels, Facebook, Gaana Hotshots, and a few local apps that grew after the TikTok ban.
