At its annual Tech Summit in Maui, Hawaii, Qualcomm announced its flagship chip Snapdragon 865. This chip is the successor of Snapdragon 855+ and will come with a separate (not integrated) X55 5G modem launched earlier this year.

It is interesting to note that the company has been teasing Snapdragon chips with integrated 5G models for the past 10 months and it even confirmed a 700-series processor with integrated 5G. Snapdragon 765/765G brings integrated 5G connectivity. But nothing like that for flagship chip. A separate 5G modem means more expensive and power-hungry phones.

Qualcomm boasts an improvement in AI performance. Improved AI engine is now capable of 15TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) operations. There will also be 25% better graphics capabilities. The new ISP will be capable of shooting 8K video at 30fps and decoding 8K video at 60fps.

All devices that will come with Snapdragon 865 will also offer 5G connectivity even if your region is still waiting for a 5G network. There won’t be an option to make a 4G phone with the 865.

Smartphones with Snapdragon 865 will come starting next year. We can expect Samsung Galaxy S11 to be the first phone with this flagship Chip. Xiaomi has already confirmed the Mi 10 with Snapdragon 865. Motorola and Nokia have also confirmed their plans for smartphones with this flagship chip.
