At one point or the other, we have all thought about the experience we would get if the iPhone could run on the Android operating system. Well, it looks like the possibility of this happening is no more vague. Development studio Tendigi has created a new piece of technology to make this possible.

Developer Nick Lee, through the Tendigi Blog, unveiled a 3D printed case which could make this combination a possibility.

“The main inspiration was the intense feelings Android and iOS users have about each other,” Lee told The Next Web. “I said to myself — ‘What if you could have it all on one device?'”

Lee is definitely not a newbie when it comes to booting non-iOS platforms on iOS devices. Some time ago, he had successfully loaded and ran Windows 95 on the Apple Watch. It had some limitations like it took the operating system an hour to boot on the device and a special motor has to be attached to the screen to prevent it from turning off, however, the OS on its own was fully functional.

According to Lee, the fact that Google is an open source platform and allows development through the Android Open Source Project helped him in developing the project. The customer version of the Android Marshmallow v6.0.1 that he developed runs on a Lemaker HiKey board. The plans for the 3D printed case was taken from Thingiverse.

Along with the board, the case also comes with a boost converter, a battery, and a resistor. When the prototype was released, the case looked a lot bulky, then the overall design was toned down to almost the same dimensions of an iPhone battery case. The new design also added a USB, HDMI, and SD card slot openings.

When connected via the lightning cable, you can launch the Android OS directly.
