After getting Voice calling and material design options for Android app, now Whatsapp has added Google Drive Backup option. With this new option, you will be able to backup your Whatsapp chats directly to your Google Drive account.
This new backup option is available in WhatsApp version 2.12.45 for Android. If you cannot see this option in your app, you will have to update it to the latest version. At the time of writing the post, this version was not yet available from official website or Google Play. You will have to wait or download it from APK Mirror.
Once you have updated your WhatsApp app to this latest version, you will see a new option for Google Drive. Go to app’s Settings, Chat settings and Chat Backup option. Here, you need to add your Google account. WhatsApp will first make a local backup and then it will upload your data to Google Drive.
Official release is expected to come soon.
It is unclear whether users will be able to access the chat history in Google Drive. We expect that the backup will be encrypted hence users will not be able to read conversations.
Recently, WhatsApp also confirmed to have 800 million active users on its messaging platform. Growth rate of WhatsApp is really high.
