Bharti Airtel has finally decided to withdraw the launch of its VoIP pack and separate charges for VoIP calls. After announced the changes in its terms and conditions to confirm that it will start charging for VoIP calls separately and launched VoIP tariff later. But, this move was heavily criticized by consumers who were ready to switch to other service providers.

Airtel has taken its steps back after TRAI issued a note that it will issue a consultation paper on issues relating to VOIP and other services offered by OTT players.

Airtel said,

In view of the news reports that a consultation paper will be issued shortly by TRAI on issues relating to services offered by OTT players including VOIP, we have decided not to implement our proposed launch of VoIP packs.

We have no doubt that as a result of the consultation process a balanced outcome would emerge that would not only protect the interests of all stakeholders and viability of this important sector but would also encourage much-needed investments in spectrum and roll out of data networks to fulfil the objective of digital India.

Now the important point to note is that TRAI will issue a consultation on OTT services which include instant messaging, Apps, Internet TV, M2P, IPTV, social network and more. So, the future of this issue will be based on the TRAI’s consultation paper. And it is also worth to mention that Airtel has withdraw is plans not because of consumers, but because of implementation of TRAI consultation.
