Microsoft unveils Windows 10 operating system

Microsoft has unveiled its new operating system called Windows 10. yes, it will be called Windows 10, not Windows 9. Until now, we knew it as codename ‘Threshold’ and were expecting the name Windows 9.

Starting tomorrow, Microsoft will launch a Windows Insider Program. Under this program, it will give users access to Windows 10. Windows 10 will be available for users in late 2015. Microsoft also said that it will unveil more consumer features of Windows 10 early 2015.

“Windows is at a Threshold and now it’s time for a new Windows,” Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating System said at the event. “It wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9.”

This new Windows 10 OS will offer tailored experience for different screen sizes. But it will have the same app store and app updates will be available for apps across all devices.

“One product family. One platform. One store.”

Windows 10

Windows 10 brings the start menu back. It is the combination of Windows 7 start menu and Windows 8 start screen. It is the same what we saw in the previous leaked video. Start menu has live tiles which can also be resized. Search box will also bring results from web and you can see the results without opening the browser.

Like in Windows 8, Microsoft has kept the touch part in this OS. So, you can enjoy Windows on touchscreen. But Microsoft want users with keyboard and mouse also enjoy Windows 10 equally.

This start screen contains live tiles, virtual desktop, notification center and cortana integration.

Metro Apps can now also open in Windowed mode on the desktop. You can also use side by side standard Windows desktop app. Windows 10 will also allow users to work with multiple desktops.

Microsoft did not show consumer features of Windows 10. But it confirmed that it will showcase more consumer features of Windows 10 early 2015.
