SHort Message Service(SMS), that is a popular communication way and is more popular than calls on mobile, is now two decades old. Today, on 3 December, It has completed its 20 year.

SMS was began when a British Enginee, Neil Papworth sent first text message over the Vodafone UK network. The message was “Merry Christmas.

But the concept of SMS was born back in 1984 when a 32-year-old graduate engineer named Matti Makkonen ca,e with an idea of messaging over GSM network. One year later in 1985, researcher Friedhelm Hillebrand suggested that 160 characters was “perfectly sufficient” for all communication purposes. After that it became a SMS standard.

After that, in 1993, the first commercial SMS service started in Sweden followed by US and UK in the same year. in 1994, Nokia came up with Nokia 2110. It was the first GSM phone that was SMS enabled.

Now SMS is more popular the voice calls. In 2011 more than 150 billion text messages were sent that was only 51 billion in 2006. It will always remain more popular than any communication way. Although, so many apps like WhatsApp, Skype, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and BBM are now available. But all apps require Internet connection so there may be time gap. But SMS messages are instant available to end-user in most of the cases.
