Nokia has announced a new update to its Maps app and launched real-time traffic for its smartphone users in Delhi and Mumbai.

Today, Nokia has showcased their real-time updates feature in a press conference in Delhi. This new feature is available to Nokia users having Symbian and Windows Phone on Nokia Maps or Nokia Drive Application.

“We aim to empower people, via location-aware technology, sensor-rich devices, and the internet, to explore and enjoy the increasingly hybridised physical and digital world around us. Our aim is to introduce new services such as traffic update, which will make consumers early adopters of the latest technology for a stress free and productive life,” said Vipul Mehrotra, director, Smart devices, Nokia India.

Nokia claims to cover more than 1500 KM of roads across the two cities and also promised to update the routes and new developments. This service is powered by NAVTEQ Traffic Pro real-time traffic service and offers superior coverage with detailed information on traffic speeds on motorways, main and secondary roads to enable accurate estimated arrival times helping consumers save time, fuel and frustration.

This service works on the base of the number of active Nokia devices in the area. When a user sets his location on the map, he is taken as the part of the service to get the traffic details and then build the statistics according to it. So if a route has a large number of Nokia users using the Nokia Drive App then it will mark that as a congested route(red).

“The launch of this traffic feature on Nokia smartphones reflects the ever-growing consumer appetite for more interactive location-based services beyond traditional turn-by-turn navigation,” said Rajat Tandon, director Sales, Nokia, Location & Commerce.

This service will be really helpful for users in big cities to know the real traffic condition and then select the path. Nokia has also promised to take this service to some more metro cities in India. This is just the testing of the service in these 2 big Indian cities which faces a huge amount of traffic. Although most of the users set their location on the maps only when they want to know the route or they are using the app. But this service needs users to set their location permanent of the app. I hope users will also like this new feature as it will surely help them and get a better road and traffic free drive.
