There could be several reasons to know what motherboard is installed on your system. Maybe you want to sell your PC and want to know the exact configuration to add to the listing. If you are thinking to upgrade your PC, you need to know what motherboard you have to understand if the new RAM and processor can support the existing motherboard. There could be a few more reasons to know what motherboard is there on your PC. If you are not sure what motherboard was installed on your system, you can easily find out using different ways. In this article, I am listing a few different ways to check what motherboard your system has.

There are different companies that offer motherboards. Here is a list of motherboard manufacturers

  • MSI
  • ASUS (or ASUSTeK)
  • Gigabyte
  • ASRock
  • Biostar
  • EVGA

You can easily open the PC cabinet to check the logo on the motherboard. With the logo, you can easily find out the motherboard’s manufacturer. Then you can look for the motherboard’s chipset name on the board. It will be a 4-digit code starting with a letter followed by three numbers.

The motherboard model is usually printed with large text. So, you can easily find out the motherboard’s model by checking the board. Not all people are enough courageous to open the cabinet and check the motherboard. So, I am adding different ways to find out what kind of motherboard do I have without opening the cabinet.

Check the motherboard using Command Prompt

Command prompt in Windows or Linux terminal is a useful tool. You can easily find out the motherboard of your PC using a simple command. To open the command prompt on your PC, press Windows + R to open the RUN Box. Here type CMD and press enter. It will open the command prompt. Now type the following command.

wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer

And press enter. It will reveal the Make & Model of your motherboard.

Use ‘System Information’

After using the CMD to know the motherboard’s name of your PC, you can use the 2nd method for confirmation. Use PC’s ‘System Information’ to check what motherboard you have. To open System Information on your PC, press the Windows key + R to open the Run box. Type msinfo32 and hit enter. It will open System information.

On the System Information panel, scroll down until you see the ‘Baseboard manufacturer’ item. It will tell you the brand of the motherboard and the Baseboard Product will tell you the chipset and type of motherboard.

Use third-party software

If you further want to confirm, you can use third-party software that displays the hardware information of a PC. I personally recommend CPU-Z. It is free software that does a good job.
