There is a lot of confusing advice about laptop batteries. Some people say you should always unplug the charger once the battery reaches 100%. Others say you should keep the laptop plugged in whenever you are working at a desk. Both statements are missing an important part of the story.
Most modern laptops use lithium-ion batteries, and these batteries do not need to be regularly discharged like older battery technologies. In fact, deliberately running your laptop down to a low percentage just to charge it again is not a good battery-care strategy. Microsoft recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges and keeping the battery in a moderate range, roughly 20% to 80%, whenever possible.
So, should you keep your laptop plugged in?
If you mostly use your laptop at a desk, plugging it in makes sense
If your laptop spends most of its time on a desk, there is little reason to keep running it on battery and then charging it again.
A battery cycle is based on the amount of battery capacity you actually use, not simply the number of times you connect the charger. Apple explains that using 50% of the battery and then charging it, followed by another 50% of usage later, adds up to one cycle. Rechargeable batteries have a finite cycle life, after which their capacity gradually declines.
This does not mean every small discharge is harmful. It simply means there is no battery-health benefit in deliberately creating more battery cycles when you already have access to a power outlet.
For desk use, keeping the charger connected is therefore perfectly reasonable.
But there is another issue.
You don’t want the battery sitting at 100% forever
Keeping the laptop plugged in is not the same as saying that the battery should remain at 100% all the time.
Lithium-ion batteries chemically age, and the charging pattern and temperature both affect how quickly this happens. Microsoft specifically warns that keeping a battery at 100% all the time can cause it to deteriorate faster.
This is why many modern laptops have some form of battery protection or smart charging. The laptop may stop charging the battery below 100%, or deliberately keep it around a lower level when it detects that the machine is usually connected to power.
Apple’s Mac laptops, for example, have battery health management that looks at temperature history and charging patterns and can reduce the maximum charge to slow chemical ageing.
Microsoft’s Smart Charging works on the same basic principle. When enabled, a compatible Windows laptop can remain plugged in while keeping the battery below 100% to reduce long-term wear.
The best option is a charge limit
If your laptop has a battery charge limit, use it.
You may find an option to stop charging at 70%, 80%, 85% or another level. The option may vary depending on the device manufacturer. This is useful if you spend most of your working day connected to a charger. Instead of constantly charging the battery to 100%, the laptop can use wall power while keeping the battery at a level that puts less stress on it.
You also don’t need to obsess over exactly 80%. The important idea is to avoid keeping a lithium-ion battery at a very high charge level for long periods when you don’t need the extra capacity.
Microsoft recommends keeping the battery around 20% to 80% when possible, while some devices use their own charging limits and battery-management systems.
Heat is a bigger problem than many people realise
Battery health is not only about charging. Heat can accelerate the ageing of lithium-ion batteries. Microsoft recommends avoiding high temperatures while using or charging a device because excessive heat can permanently reduce battery capacity. Apple also considers temperature history when managing battery health on Mac laptops.
This is especially important with gaming laptops and powerful machines. If your laptop gets very hot while gaming or doing heavy workloads, keeping it plugged in is not automatically a problem, but the heat generated by the workload can contribute to battery ageing.
So don’t block the laptop’s air vents, don’t use it on surfaces that trap heat, and don’t treat the charger as the only thing that matters when thinking about battery health.
Do you need to unplug the charger every time?
No.
If you are working at your desk and your laptop has proper charging management, there is no need to repeatedly unplug and reconnect the charger just because the battery has reached a certain percentage.
In fact, Microsoft specifically says that users with Smart Charging do not need to unplug their device simply to prevent it from staying at 100%. The feature is designed to manage charging while the laptop remains connected to power.
The better approach is to let the laptop’s charging system do its job.
What if your laptop doesn’t have a charge limit?
Then you have fewer options, but you still don’t need to panic.
If you use the laptop mostly at a desk, keeping it plugged in is still practical. Just make sure the laptop is not constantly running hot and, if possible, use the manufacturer’s battery-management feature.
You can also use the battery normally when you need to move around. There is no need to deliberately drain it to 0% before charging it again.
If you know you will need the laptop away from a power outlet, charge it fully. The purpose of a laptop battery is to provide portable power, so there is no point sacrificing usability just to maintain an arbitrary percentage.
What should you actually do?
I have already made it clear what you should do. So, let me summarize it again.
If you work at a desk: Keep the laptop plugged in.
If your laptop supports a charge limit: Set a sensible limit, such as 80%, if you rarely need the full battery capacity.
If you need to travel: Charge it to 100% when you need the extra runtime.
Avoid: Regularly draining the battery to 0% just because you think it needs a full discharge.
Pay attention to: Heat, especially during gaming and other demanding workloads.
The biggest misconception is that you have to choose between “always plugged in” and “always using the battery.” You don’t.
The smarter approach is to reduce unnecessary battery cycling while also avoiding long periods at a very high charge level and excessive heat. Modern laptops already have charging systems designed to handle much of this automatically.
So, if your laptop spends eight hours a day on your desk, there is no reason to unplug it just to make the battery discharge and charge again. If your laptop offers a battery charge limit or smart charging feature, use it. That is a much better strategy for long-term battery health.
