Netflix is giving viewers a new way to take part in live shows with real-time voting. This feature lets members influence what happens as the episode airs and make live events more interactive and fun.
Voting has always been part of TV, from music competitions to reality shows. On Netflix, members have been showing love for their favorite series, movies, and specials with thumbs up and thumbs down for over ten years. Now, the company is taking it further by letting viewers vote live during select events.
The first show to use this feature is Star Search, which premieres today at 6 pm PT/9 pm ET. Viewers can cast their vote while the episode unfolds, alongside millions of others around the world.
Real-time voting works only on select live events. If you are watching on a TV or streaming device, you can vote using your remote. On the Netflix mobile app, you just tap the screen. It does not work on web browsers, so make sure to use a phone or TV when tuning in. Netflix also has guides on Tudum and on its Help Center for those who want step-by-step instructions.
Netflix first tested a version of this feature on Dinner Time Live with David Chang. The company says viewers enjoyed being able to participate without interrupting the show.
Each Netflix profile gets one vote, whether watching alone or in a watch party with friends or family. That vote can directly impact how the show progresses and what happens with the contestants.
Star Search is just the beginning. Netflix plans to bring real-time voting to more live events. It gives members a way to feel connected and influence the action, no matter where they are watching.
