Many Windows users are once again facing an annoying issue after the latest security update. Several PCs started booting directly into BitLocker Recovery mode following the October 2025 security updates for Windows 10 22H2, Windows 11 24H2, and Windows 11 25H2.
Microsoft has officially acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the bug is related to BitLocker. The problem mostly affects Intel-based systems with Modern Standby, a low-power mode that keeps the computer connected to the network while asleep. This feature is designed to wake PCs instantly, not trigger BitLocker recovery.
The recovery screen usually appears when the system detects potential threats or hardware changes, such as a new TPM or firmware. However, this time it is happening without any security risks.
Thankfully, no data is lost if users know their BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft explained that entering the correct key will allow the computer to boot normally. The company also mentioned that it is already working on a fix. IT administrators can temporarily resolve the issue using the Known Issue Rollback group policies to undo the faulty update changes.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. A similar bug appeared in May 2025, forcing many Windows 10 users into BitLocker Recovery after another Patch Tuesday update.
Since Microsoft now enables BitLocker by default on all Windows 11 editions, users should always keep their recovery key stored safely. Drive encryption is important for protecting data, but such bugs and poor communication can lead to unnecessary confusion and data access problems.
