Microsoft has announced the Xbox Nano Controller, a compact gamepad designed for players who want to enjoy Xbox games without carrying a full-sized controller. Priced at $49.99, the new controller targets mobile gaming, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and players with smaller hands.
The Xbox Nano Controller measures just over 5 inches in length and weighs 99 grams. That makes it considerably smaller and lighter than Microsoft’s regular Xbox controllers, making it easier to carry in a pocket or a small bag. However, the compact design does not mean Microsoft has removed essential controls. The controller retains all 18 standard gameplay inputs found on a regular Xbox controller.

The smaller size could make the controller a useful option for people who regularly play games on their phones or tablets. Carrying a full-sized controller can be inconvenient when travelling, while touchscreen controls are not ideal for every game. The Xbox Nano Controller aims to offer a middle ground without taking up much space.
Microsoft is also including a built-in rechargeable battery, so users do not need to keep replacing disposable batteries. There is a programmable Action Button that can be assigned to frequently used functions, including taking screenshots and recording gameplay clips. This could be useful for players who want quick access to these features without navigating through menus.
The controller supports Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles through Xbox Wireless technology. It also connects to Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, Android devices, and iPhones and iPads through Bluetooth. Supported smart TVs and tablets are also compatible, which makes it easier to use the controller across different screens.
Xbox Cloud Gaming appears to be one of the main reasons behind the new controller’s compact design. Players can stream supported games to compatible smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs without needing to carry an Xbox console. A smaller controller makes sense for this type of gaming, particularly for people who travel frequently or prefer playing away from their main gaming setup.
However, there is one detail worth considering before buying it. Microsoft is charging $49.99 for the Xbox Nano Controller but will not include a USB-C charging cable in the box. Most users may already have a compatible cable, but leaving it out of the package still feels like an unnecessary compromise for a controller at this price.
Microsoft is also planning promotional bundles in the US. Customers who purchase select Samsung TVs during the holiday season will be eligible for an offer that includes the Xbox Nano Controller and two months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for new members. A similar offer will be available with select Meta Quest headsets.
The Xbox Nano Controller is available to pre-order for $49.99. Microsoft says shipments will begin in November across more than 30 markets, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several European countries.
The controller could be a practical accessory for cloud gaming and travel, but its appeal will depend on how comfortable the smaller design feels during longer gaming sessions. Players who mainly game at home with a traditional controller may have little reason to switch. For those who want a lightweight gamepad for phones, tablets, and supported TVs, however, the Xbox Nano Controller offers a more portable alternative.
