Nvidia is about to put DLSS 5 in the hands of gamers. The company has confirmed that its new AI-powered rendering technology will officially launch on September 3. It promises to give players their first chance to experience the feature outside Nvidia’s demonstrations.

NBA 2K27 will be the first major game to use DLSS 5. Support will arrive with the game on September 4, and the feature will be available on GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards as well as GeForce NOW.

DLSS 5 is built around Nvidia’s new 3D-Guided Neural Rendering technology. Instead of relying only on traditional rendering techniques, it uses AI to generate and improve parts of the final image. Nvidia says this can enhance details such as lighting, textures and image quality while also helping maintain high frame rates.

The company has set a very high target for the technology. Nvidia describes DLSS 5 as a way to bring “Hollywood-grade photorealism” to games. That claim will now face its first real test.

DLSS 5 has already attracted plenty of criticism since Nvidia showed it at SIGGRAPH 2026. Some gamers and industry professionals argued that the results looked more like an AI-generated filter than a natural improvement to game graphics. Others raised concerns about AI becoming too involved in the final visual output of games.

Nvidia, however, is standing behind the technology. The company believes DLSS 5 can give developers more control over their visual ambitions and says the technology is designed to help them realize their original artistic vision.

NBA 2K27 should provide an interesting test because realistic player faces and lighting are a major part of modern sports games. Nvidia has already shown comparison images featuring players including Cade Cunningham and Tyrese Haliburton.

The company is also highlighting performance. With DLSS technologies enabled, Nvidia says an RTX 5090 can run NBA 2K27 at 4K resolution, Ultra settings and ray tracing at up to 370 frames per second with DLSS 5.

That number is obviously more useful as a demonstration of Nvidia’s technology than a practical target for most players. The more important question is whether DLSS 5 can improve image quality without introducing the visual artifacts or artificial-looking details that have caused concern.

A new GeForce Game Ready Driver will be released for the launch. It will enable DLSS Neural Rendering in supported games.

Nvidia is also keeping its previous options available. Users who do not want to move to DLSS 5 can continue using existing DLSS technologies, including DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction.

The September 3 launch is therefore an important moment for Nvidia. DLSS 5 has spent weeks being judged through demos and screenshots. Once NBA 2K27 support goes live, players will finally be able to judge the technology in an actual game.

If the results match Nvidia’s claims, DLSS 5 could become an important step in AI-based game rendering. If the output still looks artificial, the “AI filter” criticism is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
