Google has announced the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker that combines a colour display with advanced health tracking and built-in GPS. Unlike screenless fitness bands, the Fitbit Edge has a 1.34-inch AMOLED display and a physical side button for easier navigation during workouts.

The tracker also introduces a modular design with a replaceable battery, making it Google’s first repairable fitness tracker. It supports more than 40 exercise modes and tracks heart rate, sleep, blood oxygen levels, and other health metrics.

The Fitbit Edge features an aluminium body and weighs 17.7 grams without the band. Its 1.34-inch AMOLED display supports an always-on mode and offers 46% more viewing area than previous-generation Fitbit trackers. A physical side button lets users control workouts without relying entirely on the touchscreen.

The tracker has 5 ATM and IP68 ratings for water and dust resistance. It can be used for swimming at depths of up to 50 metres under the specified conditions. Google has also used a modular internal design with a replaceable 65mAh battery, which should make repairs easier.

For activity tracking, the Fitbit Edge has built-in GPS and Galileo support, so users can record routes without carrying a connected phone. Google claims its antenna design improves location accuracy by up to 40% compared with previous models. The tracker also supports automatic activity recognition, more than 40 workout modes, and an altimeter for tracking elevation during activities such as hiking and running.

It tracks metrics such as Cardio Load, Daily Readiness, VO2 Max, and Active Zone Minutes. Users can also broadcast heart rate data to compatible gym equipment.

The Fitbit Edge uses optical, electrical, and temperature sensors to monitor health metrics throughout the day. It tracks heart rate around the clock and can alert users when their heart rate crosses configured high or low thresholds.

The tracker also supports on-demand ECG readings to help detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), along with irregular heart rhythm notifications. Its sleep tracking features include sleep-stage analysis, blood oxygen monitoring, heart rate variability, and skin temperature measurements.

Google Health provides additional insights into longer-term changes in health metrics. These include monthly blood pressure trends and estimated insulin resistance markers. Such estimates are not a substitute for medical tests or a doctor’s assessment.

Google claims up to seven days of battery life on a single charge. The Fitbit Edge supports magnetic charging, with five minutes of charging providing up to 24 hours of use. A full charge takes around 90 minutes.

The tracker connects to phones over Bluetooth 5.4 and supports smartphone notifications, quick text replies on compatible devices, media controls, alarms, timers, and basic Google Maps guidance. It is compatible with Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later, and requires a Google Account and the Google Health app.

Google Fitbit Edge Price and Availability

The Google Fitbit Edge costs $179.99 and comes with small and large silicone Active Bands. It is available in Matte Black, Satin Silver, Satin Pyrite, and Champagne Gold finishes.

Google has also announced a Stephen Curry Special Edition priced at $219.99. It features a Satin Pyrite aluminium case and a water-repellent recycled polyester band with colours inspired by the basketball player.

Pre-orders are open through the Google Store and authorised retailers, with retail availability starting October 27. Buyers also get a three-month trial of Google Health Premium.
