Cloudflare has entered the AI browser race with the launch of Kitesurf, a new browser built specifically for AI agents instead of human users. Unlike traditional browsers such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, Kitesurf is designed to help AI systems browse websites, fill out forms, extract information, and complete online tasks automatically.

The company says Kitesurf is now available in beta and can be used for free through Browser Run, giving developers an easy way to build AI-powered applications without creating their own browser from scratch.

Before I explain what Kitesurf is and what it can do, let me first explain how normal web browsers work. Most web browsers are designed around the needs of human users. They focus on visual elements like rendering web pages, tabs, themes, bookmarks, and browser extensions.

But Kitesurf takes a completely different approach. Since AI agents do not need to “see” websites the way humans do, Cloudflare has optimized the browser for things that matter to AI workloads. These include faster page processing, lower memory usage, reduced computing costs, and better handling of large context windows.

The browser is also designed with AI-specific security risks in mind. As AI agents become capable of interacting with websites on their own, they also become targets for attacks such as prompt injection, where malicious web content attempts to manipulate the AI into performing unintended actions.

Cloudflare says Kitesurf has been built to address these new challenges while keeping AI-powered browsing efficient.

Modern AI agents are being designed to complete real tasks such as booking appointments, comparing products, submitting forms, managing business workflows, or collecting information from multiple websites. To perform these tasks, AI needs access to a web browser.

Today, most AI companies rely on Chromium-based browsers running in the background. While they work well, they are resource-intensive because Chromium includes many features designed for human browsing that AI simply does not need.

Kitesurf removes much of that overhead. According to Cloudflare, the browser consumes significantly less CPU power and memory than Chromium for common AI tasks such as taking screenshots or extracting HTML content.

Lower resource usage also means lower cloud computing costs, something that becomes increasingly important as businesses deploy thousands or even millions of AI agents.

Cloudflare says the project came together surprisingly quickly. The company started developing Kitesurf only 12 weeks ago.

Rather than building everything from scratch, the browser combines several existing open-source technologies. It uses Blitz for rendering, Firefox’s Stylo CSS parser, and the Boa JavaScript engine written in Rust. Everything runs on Cloudflare Workers, the company’s serverless computing platform.

Despite its short development cycle, Cloudflare says Kitesurf already passes more than 215,000 web platform tests, with hundreds of additional tests passing every week as development continues.

Although the browser is aimed at developers, its impact could eventually be felt across many industries.

Some possible use cases include:

  • AI customer support agents that log into websites and solve user issues.
  • Virtual assistants that fill out government or business forms automatically.
  • Shopping assistants that compare prices across multiple online stores.
  • Business automation tools that collect reports from dashboards and web portals.
  • Research agents that gather information from hundreds of websites within minutes.
  • AI testing tools that automatically verify whether websites are working correctly after software updates.

Instead of building complex browser automation systems themselves, developers can simply use Kitesurf as the foundation for these AI-powered services.

The launch of Kitesurf shows a bigger change happening across the AI industry. Companies are no longer focusing only on building smarter language models. They are now creating the infrastructure that allows those models to perform useful work on the internet.

As AI agents become more capable, browsers may become one of the most important parts of the AI stack. Every online task, whether it is making a booking, purchasing a product, or interacting with a business portal, still happens inside a browser.

This creates an opportunity for companies like Cloudflare to build specialized tools that make AI browsing faster, cheaper, and more secure.

It also raises an interesting possibility. If AI-first browsers continue to improve, developers may gradually move away from heavyweight browser automation frameworks in favor of lightweight browsers built specifically for autonomous agents. That could reduce infrastructure costs while making AI services more responsive and scalable.

Kitesurf is still in beta, so it remains to be seen how widely it will be adopted. However, the launch shows that the next generation of web browsers may not be built for people at all. Instead, they could become the engines powering millions of AI agents working behind the scenes on behalf of users and businesses.
