IO Interactive has sold more than 4 million copies of 007 First Light, less than three months after the James Bond game launched. The milestone is a strong result for the studio and puts the game among the biggest releases of 2026 so far.

The game sold 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours and reached 2.7 million sales in its first week. It has now added another 1.3 million copies since that first-week milestone. The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also in development.

The US market has been important for the game. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella has reported that 007 First Light is currently the second best-selling game in the US in 2026, behind Resident Evil Requiem, which has sold around 7 million copies.

That puts IO Interactive’s four-million milestone into better perspective. This is not simply a game that had a strong launch and quickly disappeared. It has continued to sell after its first few weeks.

The game reached 71,068 concurrent players on Steam at its peak on May 31, according to Steam data collected by Techlomedia. The current number is much lower. 007 First Light has around 971 players on Steam, with a 24-hour peak of 1,904 and a 30-day peak of 4,484.

That sounds dramatic, but it needs some context.

007 First Light is primarily a single-player game. Players can buy it, finish the campaign and move on to another game. Unlike a multiplayer title, it does not need millions of people playing every day to remain commercially successful.

Steam also represents only the PC audience. The game is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so these numbers cannot be used to estimate the total active player base.

The falling Steam numbers are therefore not necessarily a problem. They simply show that most PC players are not still playing the game regularly several months after launch.

IO Interactive is not done with 007 First Light yet. The studio has a Year One roadmap that includes new Tactical Sim missions, weapons, challenges and other content. New Game Plus and Path Tracing support are also planned for PC.

The game will also get the G2 Glasses gadget and a new mission involving Bawma, which could feature the famous Golden Gun.

This additional content could help bring some players back, although I do not expect 007 First Light to suddenly become a major live-service game. Its main appeal remains the single-player Bond experience, and that is perfectly fine.

IO Interactive is also working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version. Retailer listings have pointed to a possible September 16 release, although IO Interactive has not officially confirmed that date yet.

The Switch 2 launch could be useful for the game. It will introduce 007 First Light to a new audience and gives players the option to experience the Bond adventure in a portable format.

It could also help extend the game’s sales tail later in the year, particularly if the launch arrives alongside some of the planned content.

The bigger story here is what IO Interactive has achieved with its first James Bond game. The studio had to create its own version of Bond instead of directly adapting one of the movies. It also had to build a new game around the character while moving beyond the Hitman formula that made IO Interactive famous.

The early numbers show that the gamble worked. The four-million figure also gives IO Interactive a strong reason to continue its Bond project. There is no confirmed sequel yet, but it is difficult to imagine the studio and its partners ignoring a game that has reached this level of sales so quickly.

007 First Light has not just benefited from the James Bond name. It has turned that licence into a commercially successful new game, and that may be the most important milestone of all.
