Sony has announced Until Dawn 2, a new sequel to its choice-driven horror game. Developed by Firesprite and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game will launch on January 28, 2027, for PlayStation 5. Pre-orders will open on September 10.

Until Dawn 2 follows the Dead True, a ghost-hunting crew looking for their biggest story yet. Their investigation at Blackwood Sanatorium takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Yoona, a supernatural survivor who leads them to Akishima Island.

The island has been abandoned for decades and hides secrets that go much deeper than the crew expected. From there, the story will once again put players in control of what happens next.

Players will have to make decisions that can change the course of the story and determine who survives. Following a signal could help find a missing friend, while taking a different path may reveal important clues. Even when the game presents an obvious choice, players can decide to take another approach.

That choice-driven structure was one of the biggest strengths of the original Until Dawn. The 2015 game became known for its branching story, horror-movie atmosphere and the possibility of keeping every character alive or watching them die depending on the player’s decisions.

The original Until Dawn was well received and developed a strong following among fans of interactive horror. Its mix of cinematic storytelling, quick-time events and meaningful choices helped it stand out from other horror games.

The 2024 remake gave the game another chance to reach a new audience, but its reception was more mixed. It currently has a 70 Metascore on PS5, with critics praising the improved visuals and the original game’s story while questioning some of the technical performance and the amount of new content.

That gives Until Dawn 2 a fairly clear challenge. Players will expect the sequel to offer more than a cinematic horror story. The choices need to feel meaningful, with decisions that can genuinely change relationships, events and who makes it to the end.

Firesprite also has an opportunity to expand the formula rather than simply repeat the first game. The new island setting should give the studio plenty of room for new mysteries, locations and supernatural threats.

Sony has not revealed much about the gameplay or characters beyond the initial story setup. But the January release date means players will not have to wait too long to find out whether Until Dawn 2 can deliver the kind of unpredictable horror experience that made the original so memorable.
